All horses registered with the AMHA after 1996, must undergo DNA testing. Before you panic and try to find a geneticist or call your veterinarian, read over the following information. This is literally as easy as pulling hair. You may request either a DNA Sampling Kit or Parentage Qualification for your horse. A DNA Sampling Kit MUST BE completed before a Parentage Qualification test can be performed.

For More information, please feel free to contact the Marsha Barlett in the AMHA Office at 817-783-5600 or by email marsha@amha.org

Procedures for DNA Testing

So what's the difference between DNA Testing and Parent Qualification?

Please read our How To Guide to learn more about DNA testing.

  1. Submit the name and number of the horse to AMHA- must be requested by the owner of AMHA record.

  2. Submit the forty-five-dollar ($45.00) fee.

  3. Upon receipt of the form with all the information on the horse required by the lab, a kit will be emailed to the owner of the horse unless otherwise requested. One form is for hair sample and is also the instruction sheet.

  4. The hair sample is to be mailed to the lab in the envelope which will be included with the kit (if kit was mailed to you)- the envelope will have the address of the lab.

  4. Upon receipt of a form (kit), the same procedure as for "Stallion Only" will be followed. For parentage qualification of a foal born and registered before December 31, 1995, if a parent or parents are owned by a person other than the owner and applicant of the foal, there is a permission form which must be completed by the owners. This form must be on file with AMHA allowing the parentage to be requested.

RESULTS ARE RECEIVED APPROXIMATELY FOUR WEEKS FROM THE RECEIPT OF THE HAIR BY THE LABORATORY.
